Lawn Care Tips For A Beautiful Healthy Lawn
I want to talk to you today about the importance of lawn care and introduce you to some very important lawn care tips. In order to ensure that we have a lush green lawn, it is of the utmost importance that we learn the basic, important principles of lawn care.
Spring Mowing Tips
Lawns are best cut with a good quality, well maintained lawn mower in the morning after the dew is off, late afternoon or early evening when it is neither too damp nor too hot. Make sure to mow at the proper mowing height. If you cut the grass too short you will likely end up with a burnt lawn.
Weed control need not be a hardship and can be achieved by natural organic means or herbicides. Mowing your lawn more often during spring, keeping the dandelions cut before they go to seed and get a chance to spread is something that many of us overlook. If you want to use natural ways to curb the growth and spread of dandelions and other unsightly weeds that grow up between the stones or bricks of a patio.
One solution that seems to work quite well is to use horticultural vinegar with a high percentage of acetic acid, spraying it up close with a spray bottle to keep it from getting on your other plants and grass where you don’t want it to be as it will be harmful to those as well.
This application most likely will need to be repeated periodically as they will grow back from the long tap-root which grows deep. The best way to prevent dandelions taking over your lawn is by maintaining a thick luscious growth of green grass, leaving not much room for weeds and dandelions to grow. There are many interesting websites that have good information about natural weed control.
Privacy is another important issue in our life today where our housing is so close, we can barely do anything without being in full sight of the world around us. And even if you don’t have neighbours that watch your every move, it is still nice to have a private area where you can relax and enjoy each other’s company without worrying about being watched.
A good way around this is to plant a Boxwood or other type of hedge, which provides the necessary privacy while at the same time closing in an area to help keep your pets and children where you want them to stay. A hedge is very attractive, provides a great backdrop for flowers and will serve as a safe-haven for birds that frequent your area.
A hedge is easy to grow, is a lovely addition to your yard and will last for many years. You will need to look for the right hedge for your garden depending on where you will want it to grow, how high you want it to be and whether or not you want an evergreen or a deciduous.
Create a colourful and welcome atmosphere by planting beautiful aromatic annual flowers such as Hyacinths, Yellow crocus or Sweet Alyssum along your walk or near a door. The scent of Lavender is heavenly along the walk and is a favourite perennial of mine and they last for years, getting bigger each year. I find it best to put them in a pot with straight sides as it is very difficult to get them out of a pot with a mouth that is smaller than the bottom.
By planting a small garden filled with flowers, and an assortment of greens and herbs, you have the benefit of intense beauty, heady aroma to tease the senses and delicious salad fixins all at the same time. Many herbs have aromatic leaves and are sometime used for their aroma and beauty as well as for eating. Creeping Thyme is a favourite for walkways, rock gardens and growing between the stones of brick or the stones of a patio where weeds would normally crop up thus cutting down on the amount of weed control you have to deal with as well. Creating a beautiful lawn and garden can be both fun and fulfilling!
You can decorate your garden without spending a fortune on expensive garden decor. Sprinkle in a few collectibles such as an old wooden chair with a hole in the seat for a pot of pretty pansies, bluebells or herbs. Let the kids help you make a colorful scarecrow for one end of the garden area. An old mailbox with pretty flowers growing at its base is always a nice addition. Bird houses is one of my favorites’. Really, you are only limited by your imagination!

A good place to find interesting garden decorations is at flea markets or yard sales and very likely, if you look around on your own property, you will probably find a few useful things to liven up your garden. I love the real statue like stone garden ornaments myself as opposed to the new light version found in many stores today. True they are heavier but they are the real thing and very attractive.
